Introduction
After some time away from discussing our processes, I’m pleased to return and introduce one of the key surface treatments we use in our factory: aluminium anodising. Manufacturers widely apply this process in modern manufacturing because it enhances the natural properties of aluminium. The process forms a protective oxide layer on the metal surface, significantly improving corrosion resistance, durability, and appearance.
Thanks to these benefits, anodised aluminium finds applications across architecture, automotive manufacturing, electronics, and industrial equipment. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how our factory carries out anodising using the sulphuric acid method.

What Is Aluminium Anodising?
Aluminium anodising is an electrochemical process that converts the aluminium surface into a durable aluminium oxide layer.Blogs
Unlike paint or coatings, anodising does not deposit a layer onto the surface. Instead, the process converts the aluminium surface into a protective oxide layer that becomes an integral part of the metal.
This oxide layer provides several important advantages:
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Increased surface hardness
- Improved wear resistance
- Long-lasting decorative finishes
- Better durability in outdoor environments

Because of these properties, anodised aluminium has become a preferred material in many engineering and architectural applications.
Overview of the Aluminium Anodising Process
The sulphuric acid anodising process typically consists of the following stages:

- 1.Raw material preparation 2. Racking 3. Degreasing 4. Water rinsing 5.Alkaline etching
- 6. Neutralising 7. Chemical polishing 8. Sulphuric acid anodising 9. Colouring 10. Sealing
- 11. Final rinsing and packaging
Each step plays an important role in ensuring a consistent and high-quality anodised surface.
Step-by-Step Aluminium Anodising Process
1. Raw Material Preparation
The anodising process begins with aluminium semi-finished products, such as extruded profiles, aluminium sheets, or machined components.
Before entering the anodising line, the materials are inspected to ensure the surfaces are clean and free from major defects.
2. Racking
The aluminium components are mounted onto anodising racks.
Proper racking ensures:
- Stable positioning during processing
- Good electrical conductivity
- Uniform oxide layer formation
3. Degreasing
During manufacturing and handling, aluminium surfaces often accumulate oils, grease, and dust.
A chemical degreasing bath removes these contaminants to prepare the surface for further treatment.
4. Water Rinsing
After degreasing, the parts are rinsed with clean water to remove chemical residues.
This prevents contamination between processing tanks.
5. Alkaline Etching
In the alkaline etching stage, a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution removes the natural oxide layer and surface impurities.
This step creates a uniform surface texture and improves the appearance of the final anodised finish.
6. Neutralising
After etching, the aluminium surface is neutralised using sulphuric acid (H₂SO₄).
This removes alkaline residues and stabilises the surface before further processing.
7. Chemical Polishing
Chemical polishing improves the surface finish of aluminium components.
A mixed acid solution is used to smooth the surface and enhance brightness, which is particularly important for decorative aluminium products.
8. Sulphuric Acid Anodising
This is the core stage of the anodising process.
The aluminium parts are immersed in a sulphuric acid electrolyte and connected to an electrical current. The aluminium acts as the anode, and controlled oxidation forms a porous aluminium oxide layer on the surface.
This oxide layer provides:
- Excellent corrosion protection
- High surface hardness
- Long-term durability
9. Colouring
After anodising, the porous oxide layer can absorb colouring agents.
Many industrial processes use tin sulphate (SnSO₄) colouring technology to produce stable and consistent colours.
10. Sealing
Sealing is the final chemical treatment stage.
During sealing, the pores of the anodised layer are closed, which improves corrosion resistance and ensures long-lasting colour stability.
11. Final Rinsing and Packaging
After sealing, the aluminium products undergo a final water rinse.
The finished parts are then removed from the racks, inspected for quality, and packaged for delivery.
Why Choose Anodised Aluminium?
Anodised aluminium offers several advantages compared with other surface finishing methods.
The anodised layer is extremely durable and will not peel or flake like traditional coatings. It also provides excellent resistance to corrosion and weathering, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.
In addition, anodised aluminium maintains its appearance for many years and requires minimal maintenance.
These properties make anodised aluminium ideal for applications such as:
- Architectural aluminium systems
- Window and door frames
- Curtain walls
- Industrial components
- Electronic product housings
